Topdressing

Why Topdress?

Topdressing is a proven practice often completed in conjunction with aeration and seeding in turf maintenance programs and renovation efforts. Topdressing adds organic soil amendments, which improve the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of soil. This enhances turf quality and vigor, and improves its resistance to stress. Today, high quality compost combined with the advanced blowing application system makes both residential and commercial turf maintenance virtually effortless and with far superior results.

The Benefits of Aeration and Topdressing

  • Increases organic matter content of soil
  • Improves soil percolation rate
  • Increases water holding capacity of soil
  • Reduces soil compaction
  • Improves turf rooting and durability
  • Reduces thatch
  • Supplies plant nutrients
  • Can biologically control certain turf diseases

Recommended Procedure

  1. Core aerate turf area (2 to 5 passes) to a depth of 2 1/2 to 3 inches.
  2. Blow in a 1/2 to 3/4 inch uniform layer of high quality compost (seed can be injected at this time if needed for overseeding.
  3. If necessary, back rake the treated area to break up soil plugs and work the compost into the aeration holes.
  4. Water thoroughly.
  5. Use a quality organic fertilizer to maintain good microbiological population in the soil.

In some cases, the old lawn may need to be killed off first.
